Nuwakot: end of the project, early history PDF Print E-mail

Nuwakot is the name of one of the 75 districts of Nepal and has also become over the years a special name for our older donors: in fact, after having conducted a comprehensive program of prevention of trafficking, from 1998 to 2001, we were relocated at the end of the war in 2007, to establish mechanisms with communities of lasting protection against violence.

We have about 250 literate girls and women. Literacy operates indeed real change in their daily lives: read public signs, decipher the expiry dates of medicines, recounting its currency follow the duties of children and ultimately to form a confidence and self esteem all new.
We have formed various knowledge and know-how: know-trafficking and violence, know how to protect, care for newborns, birth registration, grow vegetables ... all identified issues with students.

We started with these girls and women, groups of solidarity savings to cope with contingencies (illness, loss of crops, death of an animal ...) and give them the strength that comes from a shared trust.
Finally and most importantly, we helped  them to create a committee for protection against violence, the committee in charge of helping women and children who are victims, directly or by reporting them to more expert people (doctors, psychologists, lawyers, etc. .). Composed of a dozen people, this committee has existed since late 2008 and has already dealt with 26 cases.

Mid 2010, the project stops as expected. But the story continues!

Indeed, committee members have never had any salary or financial interest to participate and their mobilization will not stop with the project! To enhance their legitimacy with their family and community, we helped them save the committee in the form of association. In addition we have allocated them 2,000 euros to set up one or more income generating activities for the committee. Thus each will benefit in a sustainable way, a small compensation for time spent for the committee, without PE no longer having to intervene ...at the same time, we plan to ensure regular monitoring visits for at least a year. Finally, the committee now has a place, courtesy of a local family.
